cornish GARDEN TOUR - march 18 TO 21, 2025
WORKSHOP AND GARDEN TOURS
3 DAY TOUR
Our first garden tour next year is in Cornwall. Join us from 18th to 21st March to visit some of our favourite gardens on the south coast including private gardens with their head gardeners. These gardens are particularly special having been planted by the great plant hunters of the last century and aided by the warmth of the gulf stream – giving them an unwordly feel. This year we will also include a workshop focusing on camellias and rhododendrons: Alisdair Moore Head of Gardens at Heligan will join us to talk about their pre-1920s collection of rhododendrons, garden designer Alisdair Cameron will show slides of his beautiful, innovative garden in Devon. He will talk about designing with perennials, creating meadows and preparing your garden for the year ahead. And we of course will talk about soil! An early garden tour this, will we hope inspire you for the year ahead in your gardens.
You will be guests in Henrietta's Cornish home Bokelly. The tour starts Tuesday with afternoon tea in the garden.
You will visit four of the best gardens in Cornwall with Bridget and Henrietta.
Porthpean a beautiful country house in an extraordinary setting with extensive gardens and lawns above the sheltered south coast of Cornwall. A tour of the gardens will be given by the owner Martin Petherick Chairman of the Cornish Garden Society, followed by a picnic lunch on the beach that was the setting for the film ‘About Time’.
Caerhays Castle & Spring Garden is inspiring with its natural beauty, the architectural surprises, and inescapable sense of history.
Caerhays has an international reputation for camellias and rhododendrons and is home to a world-famous National Magnolia Collection. The Head Gardener Jaimie will give a private guided tour.
Tregrehan. Tucked into the head of St Austell Bay lies Cornwall's Temperate Rainforest at Tregrehan. Protected by the hills behind, massive trees and parkland, sits a sheltered botanical oasis; one of Cornwall's Great Gardens. The beautiful glasshouse dating from 1845 is one of the few remaining of this age in the UK and the current owner of the garden, Tom Hudson, is a rare modern day plant hunter.
In 2008 The Lost Gardens of Heligan was granted National Collection Holder status by Plant Heritage for its historic and unique National Collection: Camellias and Rhododendrons Introduced to Heligan pre-1920. There are more than 70 veteran camellias and 350 ancient rhododendrons included in the collection. The earliest planting Camellia Japonica (Alba Plena) datesfrom 1792. “The sight of an exquisite ornamental garden, elegant grass lawns surrounded by towering clouds of mauve, fuschia, scarlet, and pink is simply not to be missed.” The Head Gardener will give a private tour.
The tour ends on Friday just after lunch.
